Characteristics of soft magnets

  • Very good impact resistance
  • Easy to remove and cut
The soft magnet, also called magnetic elastomer, is made of ferrite powder and an elastomer binder. The result is a flexible product that is easy to cut. Its brown sheet appearance is more or less flexible depending on the thickness and the coating it has.
This family of magnets is derived from ferrite magnets with slightly lower values due to the elastomer binder which allows the product to be flexible.
The advantage of the soft magnet is that it can be removed quickly and without damage and reused.
The load-bearing capacity is optimal when the magnet is in contact with a soft, flat, clean and sufficiently thick steel frame. It decreases for alloy steels and cast iron (-30% for cast iron) and when there is an air gap. It decreases by 0.4% per degree. This loss is reversible within the temperature limits of the material.
The maximum surface induction is 600 Gauss. This value decreases by 0.2% per degree as the temperature increases. This loss is reversible.
Magnetic elastomer is very resistant to impact and can be easily cut with all traditional blade tools (scissors, guillotines, cutters, drills, etc.)
Contact with petrol, acetone, benzene, mineral oil and chlorinated solvents should be avoided. For gluing, it is recommended to use a neoprene, epoxy or cyanoacrylate glue depending on the conditions of use. The soft magnet is resistant to water, alcohol, household detergents and the weather.
Here are some tips for the use of soft magnets on car bodies. It is necessary to apply the painted side to the bodywork. Before use, the foil or tape and the car body must be cleaned to prevent scratching. Regularly lift one corner of the film from the surface to which it is applied to limit the risk of sticking. They should not be used on sheets coated with air-drying one-component paints, such as bodywork refinishing paints.
Magnetic rubber is likely to have a shrinkage of around 3% along its length (to be taken into account for precision cutting). It should not be exposed to heat and sunlight. The adhesive version should not be stored for more than one year.
Magnetic elastomers are very flexible and easy to cut and offer a wide range of applications in the signage sector. The applications are diverse: car advertising, shop shelves, door closures (refrigerators), young driver discs, planning, educational games.
Euromag presents you with one isotropic and one anisotropic soft magnet grade.
